Phobias are actually varied and complex. People have had phobias for thousands of years, but only recently have we learned about those fears - or even known enough to call them phobias.
- The first written reference to phobic problems that we have is in the words of the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates (470-410 B.C.E)
He wrote about the many aliments and problems of his patients.
EXAMPLE; Hippocrates described a condition in one of his patients named Nicanor.
-Whenever Nicanor went out drinking, he would get terrified of the flute played by the musicians. "When the piper began to play, the music immediately threw him into such a great fright, that he was not able to bear the disorder of it." (in daylight he was fine only at night did he get so frightened.)
The word phobia wasn't used until about 500 years later, when a Roman doctor Celsus used the word hydrophobia (literally, water fear) to describe a person who had a fear of water due to rabies.
He got the word "Phobia" from a Greek God.
- Phobos was the son of Aries, the Greek god of war. He was scary, warriors would pain his face onto their shield to scare them and send them away in fear.(Phobic - someone afraid of something)
1786- Phobia was defined as "A fear of an imaginary evil, or an undue fear of a real one."
Late 1800's- Categories were made for the phobias.
1885- Sigmund Freud studies Phobias.
1947- Phobias became a separate diagnostic category in the International Classification of Diseases.
1960s- Phobias are divided into 3 categories: agoraphobia, social phobia, and specific phobias.
